Just as my field follows a certain hierarchy of networks, wood thicknesses and layers, networking has a hierarchy of definitions which I used to define my project. The first and conceptually largest definition of network is, “Something resembling an openwork fabric or structure in form or concept.”
Regarding my network as “openwork fabric in form”, a network can be defined as “A system of lines or channels that cross or interconnect.” The interconnecting and organizing of lines and planes was critical to communicate the idea of networking movements, moments, and distortions. Gilles Deleuze writes in his work “The Fold”, “Development does not go from smaller to greater things through growth or augmentation, but from the general to the special, through differentiations of an initially undifferentiated field either under the action of exterior surroundings or under the influence of internal forces that are directive… but remain neither constitutive nor performative (10).”
The verb form of the word network is, “To interact or engage in informal communication with others for mutual assistance or support.” My moments in the field rely on each other, and the other networks to structurally support it. Conceptually, networking implies a certain mutual dependence and formal organization. It can be replaced by the word “connecting”, or “defining.”
The inhabitable portion of the landscape is geared towards a space of intense physical activity. The tectonic system used in creating the landscape is similar, however the logic changes from polygonal to a “NURB” based language. The angles and information already established by the landscape is scaled and exaggerated to fit the needs of an inhabitable space. The polygonal logic uses the concept of a CV curve to generate the “NURB” based language. The curves are used to exaggerate types of spaces (open, welcoming, crowded, private…) and to emphasize areas of inhabitation.

<img style="DISPLAY: block; Synthesizing the two recipes which literally guided my projects formation through two languages (one of the crystallographer, and one of the fitness instructor), I have chosen a title or major concept for the progression of this project: networking. Just as my field follows a certain hierarchy of networks, wood thicknesses and layers, networking has a hierarchy of definitions which I used to define my project. The first and conceptually largest definition of network is, “Something resembling an openwork fabric or structure in form or concept.” My model is composed of openwork structure and “fabric”, and this is applicable as well in terms of my concept being an openwork fabric in the way it embodies information from several worlds of fitness (structural, physical, tectonic, spatial…).
Regarding my network as “openwork fabric in form”, a network can be defined as “A system of lines or channels that cross or interconnect.” The interconnecting and organizing of lines and planes was critical to communicate the idea of networking movements, moments, and distortions. Stephen Barr writes in his essay What is Topology?, “distortion is allowed provided the end result is connected in the same way as the original.” Accordingly, my field follows a controlled network of distortion following data taken from the world of fitness. Just as heart rate peaks at the middle of exercising, the distortions in my field peak in the center and then gradually return to a resting heart rate.
Along the lines of networking as a concept, the verb form of the word network is, “To interact or engage in informal communication with others for mutual assistance or support.” My moments in the field rely on each other, and the other networks to structurally support it. Conceptually, networking implies a certain mutual dependence and formal organization. It can be replaced by the word “connecting”, or “defining.”
In terms of hierarchy, hierarchical routing best describes the conceptual application of hierarchy in my project. Hierarchical routing can be defined as “The complex problem of routing on large networks can be simplified by breaking a network into a hierarchy of smaller networks, where each level is responsible for its own routing.”
This definition alone is sufficient to describe my entire project, and is applicable tectonically and conceptually. Each level of networking is responsible for a different type of “routing”, and together they create a larger more complex network. These smaller levels of organization help define lattice structures which are organizational in defining moments and deviations.

Field Attempt in Maya 2

A second attempt for a field condition through Maya. Begin by stretching, a warm up is important. Start slowly, don’t overdo it in the first couple minutes. Extend, retract, and repeat. Extend, retract, and repeat. Extend, retract, and repeat. Stay on focus. Extend, retract, and repeat. Extend, retract, and repeat. Extend, retract, and repeat. Extend, retract, and repeat. Do this for however long you feel comfortable, then work another area. Extend and flex, slowly return. Extend and flex, slowly return. Extend and flex, slowly return. Extend and flex, slowly return. Extend and flex, slowly return. Extend and flex, slowly return. Remember to stay within the range of motion. Extend and flex, slowly return. Extend and flex, slowly return. Extend and flex, slowly return. Now change the pace, start adducting quicker, and abducting quicker. This movement will become ballistic, your momentum will take over. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Remember to always return to that center of balance in your body. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Alright now for the last part, really push to reach your maximum heart rate. Your range of motion should be fully occupied. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex. Extend, flex and retract. Extend, flex and retract. Extend, flex and retract. Extend, flex and retract. Extend, flex now slowly return. Extend, flex and slowly return. Remember your two R’s, rigor and repetition.

Scientific Recipe

Gilles Deleuze writes in his work “The Fold”, “Development does not go from smaller to greater things through growth or augmentation, but from the general to the special, through differentiations of an initially undifferentiated field either under the action of exterior surroundings or under the influence of internal forces that are directive… but remain neither constitutive nor performative. (10).” This is the main architectural recipe my project must follow. The field must follow a series of events starting with general and advancing to specialized. The word specialized is also important in the context of specificity. The model must, however, comply with a certain lattice structure, which can be identified through crystallography.
Miller indices are used to identify planes of atoms scientifically within a crystal structure. They are defined through moments where the plane intercepts crystallographic axes. Joining these intercepts defines the plane which cuts through the crystal. This plane should be used as an internal lattice structure to define the crystal-like field and the parameters it occupies. As Deleuze writes, differentiation should occur from internal forces that are directive. This design should at all times follow the lattice structure that defines it, and allow for a controlled deviation.
Deleuze also writes, “According to Leibniz, two parts of really distinct matter can be inseparable, as shown not only by the action of surrounding forces that determine the curvilinear movement of a body but also by the pressure of surrounding forces that determine its hardness (coherence, cohesion) or the inseparability of its parts. (6)” This is a key framing device for my design project, the models I am creating from these notations reflect the cohesion and inseparability of the parts of the sequences.
